My paintings are born from emotion, intellect and my unconscious

MY PROCESS

Artistic inspiration does not always dictate my work. Mainly the process of showing up each day to see what appears on my canvas is what drives me. I stand before my easel and often have no preconception of what may emerge; I just let it flow. Some days I will have a vague cognitive impression and other days it is simply about a technique I wish to employ. I may restrict my palette to a few colors one day and choose an exhaustive array the next, having very little set ideas of how it will all come together in the end. I often squirt paint randomly on a blank substrate to create texture for an underpainting. From there I may blanket it with one color as a base or, when visually attracted to a pattern created, fill in the spaces with more lines and color. I have done mixed media and oil work in the past, but since I tend to paint quickly and for long stretches, acrylics have become my favorite medium. I am also a musician and songwriter and I believe my musicality subconsciously finds its way into my paintings. I strive to bring the sense of joy and childlike exuberance I feel when I’m in process to all of my finished work.

WATCH A PAINTING COME TO LIFE

As you can see, the most instrumental part of my studio, my favorite artistic tool, is color. I am a colorist. Notice the millions of paints I have lining the walls (as well as the nooks and crannies) of my studio space. For me, color is inspirational. There is so much psychology and emotion attached to every hue, that curating a palette is a challenging adventure that I love. I allow the color to speak through me. Colors speak in a language that do not rely on words. I tell stories through the various shades and hues that emerge on the canvas.
